The American Human rights Council (AHRC-USA) joins the nation in condemning the shooting of innocent students, offers its sincere condolences to the families of the dead students and wishes all the injured a speedy recovery. AHRC is shocked by this act of senseless violence and is deeply troubled by the shooter’s questioning his victims about their religion before shooting them. It’s another sad day in America when hate and ignorance lead to the loss of precious human lives and spreads fear and terror. This horrific crime on a college campus is a reminder of the need of a serious national conversation regarding guns, mental health and violence. AHRC affirms its strong position supporting President Obama’s call for reviewing the gun control laws and regulations in America. These senseless crimes should shock our conscience into action. AHRC, in the name of our common humanity, urges American elected officials on the local and national level to rise to the challenge and deal with the root causes of these crimes.
“An institution of higher learning should be a safe and welcoming place to people of all backgrounds that come together for the noble goal of learning. The massacre in Oregon should shock us all into considering the root causes of such crimes and motivate us to spare no effort to protect the sanctity of human life. The right to life without fear is one of the most important human rights,” said Imad Hamad, AHRC Executive Director.
