On Thursday, November 12 from 7-8:30 p.m., Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence (MI-14) will hold an information session on to help Yemeni nationals who wish to apply for temporary protected status (TPS) through U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The session is open to the public and it will be held at the Oakland International Academy located at 8228 Conant Street, in Detroit.
Yemen was designated for TPS on September 3, 2015 due to the ongoing armed conflict within the country. The designation means that, from September 3, 2015 through March 3, 2017, eligible nationals of Yemen who are approved for TPS will not be removed from the United States. Staff members from USCIS, Yemeni community leaders and Lawrence’s office will be on hand to provide information about the application process and eligibility requirements.
AHRC hopes that granting TPS to nationals of Yemen will help relieve some of the stresses caused by the Yemen crisis. The UN has declared Yemen as one of the worst humanitarian crises facing the world. TPS reflects the best traditions of this country in providing humanitarian aid during times of crises.
