[Michigan, September 16, 2024]

The American Human Rights Council (AHRC-USA) joins the global human rights community in condemning by the strongest terms the targeted killing of peace- activist Aysenur Ezgi Eygi., an American and Turkish dual citizen on Friday, September 6, 2024, in the occupied village of Beita, West Bank. Aysenur, a University of Washington recent graduate, was a peace activist and a volunteer with the International Solidarity Movement.

The targeted and cold-blooded murder of Aysenur brings to mind other killings of Americans that Israel got away with. Peace activist Rachel Corrie was killed in 2003 in Gaza while she was protesting the demolition of Palestinian homes. Palestinian-American Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh on 11 May 2022.

The Biden administration’s call on Israel, the killer, to investigate itself adds insult to injury and death. None of the prior investigations held anyone accountable. The current killing of Aysenur will be no different. Only Israel can act above all norms of international laws as well the US laws. In addition, it is very troubling that President Biden has yet to contact Aysenur’s family and offer condolences.

AHRC adds its voice to the United Nations’ call for independent, transparent, and genuine investigation into the targeted killing of Aysenur. It is appalling that Israel has been able to get away with murder.

AHRC extends its heartfelt condolences to Aysenur’s family, friends and fellow volunteers and activists of the International Solidarity Movement.

“We have said it and will say it again, there should be no Israel exception as to human rights and law,” said Imad Hamad, AHRC Executive director. “The lack of accountability makes Israel commit more and more crimes and puts Americans in danger,” added Hamad. “This has to stop,” concluded Hamad.
