[Michigan, May 5, 2021]: The American Human Rights Council (AHRC-USA) joins the nation in expressing its warm appreciation to all teachers and supporting staff on this Teacher’s Day that falls on May 5, 2021. This day is part of Teacher Appreciation Week that began on May 2nd and ends on May 8th.
One week is not enough to express our gratitude to all teachers and staff for their selfless and tireless efforts and dedication to education, despite the tremendous challenges. The ordinary education-related challenges were compounded by Covid-19 and the crises unleashed by the pandemic. Teaching became a bigger challenge and our nation’s teachers worked hard to make sure that the students are getting the education they need and deserve. Teaching students, especially young children, in person is a challenge as to keeping their attention, let alone via Zoom. And having short notice to prepare to deliver class material could have been an insurmountable challenge, given technology issues. All these were real hardships that teachers had to work hard to overcome.
AHRC salutes all instructors, at all levels, and around the world. Teaching is indeed the profession that makes all professions possible. Our society does not pay teachers nearly enough for the efforts they exert and the difference they make. Many think teachers get paid for twelve months while working only nine months. In fact, teachers are on a nine- month contract but can choose to be paid over nine months or over twelve months. Also, in the summer, teachers prepare for the next year’s classes. There is no question that our teachers are overworked and underpaid.
We are in May, graduation month. To the students graduating this year, AHRC wishes you all the best. We urge all students to make sure to thank their teachers in person for all they have done for them.
“Teaching is a noble profession that is, unfortunately, not well paid or appreciated,” said Imad Hamad, AHRC Executive director. “My late father was a teacher and I saw for myself his dedication to his work, in class and out of class,” added Hamad. “Our teachers are indispensable partners in bringing up a generation that believes in and promotes human rights,” concluded Hamad.
