The American Human Rights Council (AHRC-USA) joins the world community and all peace-loving people across the globe in welcoming the ceasefire reached in Gaza after over 15 months of genocide. The ceasefire is contingent on Israeli cabinet approval, which is expected this Sunday.

The ceasefire comes as a relief to the Palestinians who have been brutalized by the Israeli war machine. More than forty-six thousand Palestinians have been killed by Israel- most of them women and children. The number of the casualties is expected to dramatically increase as Palestinians return to their destroyed residential areas and look for the missing under the rubble. Israel continues to use food as a weapon against the Palestinians, allowing in a fraction of the needs of the Gaza Strip. The ceasefire agreement requires Israel to allow more aid to enter Gaza.

AHRC commends President-Elect Donald Trump for his vital role in securing this ceasefire and calls upon him to continue to press for peace. Without peace, it will be one cycle of violence after another.

Candidate Trump made promises on the campaign trail as to ceasefires in Lebanon and Gaza, as well as to peace in the region. We urge President Elect Trump to deliver on all his promises. The US should not provide unconditional aid to Israel. Any aid should be conditioned on a real commitment to peace and real movement toward a two- state solution as outlined in UN resolutions.

The ceasefire is a first step toward peace. AHRC calls for international monitors in the occupied Palestinian territories to monitor the ceasefire.
