[Michigan, April 1, 2024]:

The American Human Rights Council (AHRC-USA) condemns by the strongest terms House representative Tim Walberg’s (R-MI) genocidal remarks as to Gaza.

According to news reports, Mr. Walberg was quoted in a video talk on March 25 saying: “[W]e should not be spending a dime on humanitarian aid. It should be like Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Get it over quick.”

While this remark is consistent with the Biden administration’s support for the genocide in Gaza, it is still condemnable. And it is most disturbing that congressperson Walberg wears his religion on his sleeve and is always moralizing based on his faith. This makes his support for genocide and his callousness as to the innocent even more appalling. This sad episode serves as a reminder that bigotry and genocidal intent and practices are not limited to the adherents of one religion or one group or one nationality.

In the grand scheme of things, Walberg and his comments are insignificant as to the genocide in Gaza. The real problem is President Biden’s unlimited support of Israel and his unwillingness to put any real pressure on Israel to stop its genocide. However, supporting genocide, even if it is merely by cheerleading it, is also condemnable. Walberg being a congressperson, from a state with many Arab and Muslim Americans, makes this a lot more troubling and worrying to all of us.

One of the reasons that Israel ended up at the World Court charged with violating the Genocide Convention is similar comments by its politicians.

“The issue is not that calling for a genocide or supporting it are immoral and are against core American values and ideals, it is arguably illegal as well,” said Imad Hamad, AHRC Executive Director. “The US is a party to the Genocide Convention and for an American politician to be calling for genocide seems like a clear violation of this country’s obligations under the Convention,” added Hamad. “This is not a partisan or ideological issue, we urge all decent human beings to unequivocally condemn Walberg’s comments,” concluded Hamad.
