The American Human Rights Council (AHRC-USA) joins concerned citizens across Michigan in urging Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer to further review the new auto insurance law in Michigan.

The issue of auto insurance reform is an old public policy problem in Michigan. For many years, many complained but nothing was done to change the law. We need a new law but the rush to impose a new law on Michiganders is not the best way to fix an old problem.

The bill as it stands raises serious concerns regarding the equal treatment of Michigan’s drivers based on territorial factors and unrelated credit history. The new bill does nothing to stop car insurance companies from punishing drivers based on where they live. The legislation breaks the promise that credit history would be taken out of the equation.
