The American Human Rights Council (AHRC-USA) joins the international community and peace-loving people in condemning the recent and unprecedented Israeli Knesset legislation to ban UNRWA from functioning in the Occupied Palestinian territories in Gaza, Jerusalem, and the West Bank. Such a rogue decision is to be added to the extensive list of Israeli blatant and open violations of international law. Israel is the only entity that freely violates international law and disregards the international community without any accountability. Israel can do so due to unconditional U.S. diplomatic, political, and military aid.
Israeli designs on UNRWA are not new. UNRWA was originally founded by the United Nations in 1949, the same United Nations that created Israel in 1948 upon the Palestine Nakba. UNRWA exists because of the birth of Israel and would not exist had Israel not existed! Palestinians fled or were forced to leave, and Israel, despite international law and UN resolutions, refuses to allow them back. Palestinians get their refugee organization because their situation is unique. No other people on earth are facing a similar occupation and replacement project as is Mandatory Palestine and the Zionist enterprise.
UNRWA has been struggling for years with funding issues. Naturally, Palestine refugees have increased in number. Funding has not increased proportionately. UNRWA is essential to the very survival of the refugees as it provides them with health and education services, among other services. UNRWA is staffed by true humanitarians who have been true to the organization’s mission and should be appreciated and honored for their work.
With every passing day, there is an Israeli violation of international law, UN resolutions, international custom, or rules of basic decency. Israeli politicians have always attacked UNRWA. They have attacked the UN itself. And this is outrageous not only because Israel itself is a creature of the UN, as French President Macron reminded the Israelis.
“Israel is a rogue state, a pariah state,” said Imad Hamad, AHRC Executive Director. “Israel has always been a rogue state which should have been treated as a pariah decade earlier,” added Hamad. “The Gaza genocide has unmasked the true nature of Israel,” continued Hamad. “It should be either that Israel rescinds the ban, or Israel is kicked out of the UN,” concluded Hamad.
