The American Human Rights Council (AHRC-USA) joins the nation and all the world’s peace-loving people in recognizing Dr. Martin Luther King’s Day that falls on January 15, 2023.
Dr. King’s name is recognized worldwide. He is an icon for human rights and an inspiration to all the world’s advocates for peace and justice. His image is painted on Israel’s racist Apartheid Wall that it built on stolen Palestinian land in the West Bank.
While Dr. King is universally honored today, when he started his civil rights struggle, he was seen as a troublemaker. He was imprisoned for his peaceful struggle, for demanding the rights of Black Americans to be treated equally, rights guaranteed in the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence.
Today we see the same tactics that were used against Dr. King being used against Americans who advocate for Palestine based on the UN Charter, the Convention Against Genocide and other human rights instruments. The delegitimization and demonization is not new.
The idea that all human beings have the same moral worth and are entitled to the same rights is still being resisted, despite decades after the successes of the Civil Rights Movement in the US and the Apartheid regime of South Africa being cast in the garbage bin of history.
The Biden Administration and most of American politicians are giving unlimited support to Israel. This is done even though we know there is an Israeli genocide in Gaza and Israeli terrorism by the Israeli far right government and the illegal settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank. The First Amendment protects the right to speech and protest. However, we see Palestine advocates immorally and illegally demonized and punished for exercising these most basic rights.
Israel supporters want their false narrative to be the only narrative on Palestine. They have largely succeeded with American mainstream media and with most American politicians. However, millions of Americans disagree with the Israeli narrative. They see the Israeli assault on Gaza for what it is, as a genocide, and they call for a just and lasting resolution of the Palestine conflict. They see the bombing and starving of the Palestinians in Gaza for almost three months as unjustified under any circumstances and want the US to put an end to the genocide.
Since October 7, we have been reminded of Israeli racism by several high-level Israeli officials. One example is Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant who called Palestinians ‘Human Animals.’ American racists also did not see the full humanity of African Americans. “I am a man” is one of the slogans used during the Civil Rights struggle in the US. The Palestinians have a struggle for survival on the land in the face of a Zionist ongoing ethnic cleansing project that is playing out most clearly in Gaza as a genocide.
“Dr. King’s Day this year provides us with a renewed hope that justice will prevail in Palestine despite all the pain and the huge sacrifices of the Palestinians and their supporters,” said Imad Hamad, AHRC Executive Director. ‘Dr. King said, “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice,” we hope it bends towards justice in Palestine soon,’ concluded Hamad.
