On Wednesday, July 13, 2016, The American Human Rights Council (AHRC-USA) participated in the Common Ground Conference which was hosted by the Federal Trade Commission at the USCIS facility in Detroit. The Common Ground Conference successfully brought together a variety of lawyers, multiple law enforcement agencies, and consumer advocates from around the region to discuss issues and emerging trends in consumer fraud. Speakers included representatives from Legal Aid and Defender Association, AARP, Michigan Immigrant Rights Center, FTC, IRS, and CFPB, among others. The participants participated in focused working groups related to Debt collection and payday lending; New and used auto sales and negotiating; Mortgage fraud and sale of property on land contract; Identity theft, online safety and phone scams; Scams affecting foster youth; Scams affecting immigrants; Scams affecting seniors; Outreach to hard-to-reach populations.
