[Michigan, December 22, 2023]:

The American Human Rights Council (AHRC-USA) wishes all Christians a Merry Christmas.

December is the most special month for holidays. Christmas festivities are a universal phenomenon celebrated by many who are not Christian. Christmas is the most widely celebrated holiday on the planet. It is a holiday for sharing and enjoying time with friends and family. The Christmas tree and Santa Claus are a ubiquitous presence around the world. usually, as is usually a joyous time worldwide. Not this year.

The ongoing genocide in Gaza has cast a shadow of sadness and hopelessness over Christmas celebrations worldwide. Many think it is insensitive to celebrate while 2.2 million Gazans are facing an Israeli genocide, with US full support. Recognizing this reality, in solidarity with the Palestinians of Gaza and to protest the genocide, Bethlehem in the occupied Palestinian West Bank, the birthplace of Jesus Christ, cancelled the Christmas festivities. Palestinian Christians and Palestinian Muslims are suffering immensely in Gaza. Starved and ruthlessly bombed by the Israelis.

The entire world, except for the US, is calling for a ceasefire. Most countries voted at the UN general assembly in support of a ceasefire. However, the US keeps dragging its feet about a pending UN Security Council resolution submitted by the UAE. It is appalling that the US is supporting the immense catastrophe in Gaza. The US soft power has been wiped out by US complicity in the Gaza genocide.

AHRC continues to call for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. We urge President Biden to put an end to the ongoing genocide in Gaza and to provide for an unfettered entry of all needed relief into Gaza. Gaza today is the most devastated area on earth. Gaza cannot wait another day.

“It seems hopeless, but we can’t lose hope,” said Imad Hamad, AHRC Executive Director. “We ask all people of goodwill to continue to press for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and for peace and justice in the birthplace of Jesus Christ,” added Hamad.
