[Michigan, January 26, 2024]:

Today the World Court at The Hague issued its preliminary decision on the case submitted by South Africa accusing Israel of violating the genocide Convention in its war on Gaza.

While the Court did not order a ceasefire, it did refuse to throw the case out as Israel had requested. It granted almost all the relief required by South Africa.

Cases in the World Court sometimes take years to reach a verdict, which can be frustrating to those whose rights have been violated. This preliminary decision is a step in the right direction in holding Israel accountable for its avalanche of crimes in Gaza.

“The decision was read from the bench, detailing all the atrocities of Israel for the whole world to hear,” said Imad Hamad, AHRC executive director. “Aside from the legalities and technicalities, this is a big moral and symbolic victory for Palestine,” added Hamad.
