The American Human Rights Council (AHRC USA) joins the global community in observing the International Day of Peace on September 21. Established by United Nations Resolution 36/37 in 1981 and reaffirmed through Resolution 55/88 as a day of nonviolence and ceasefire, this observance calls the world to renew its commitment to peace.
This year’s anniversary arrives during an extraordinary moment of global and domestic tension. Across continents, the language of war, conflict, and division overshadows the promise of peace. We witness staggering loss of life, widespread destruction, mass displacement, and millions of refugees seeking safety. From Gaza, Lebanon, Iran, Yemen, Sudan, and Ukraine to other regions in turmoil, the world’s peace deficit is painfully evident. Too many people are denied the basic human right to live free from fear.
War is not inevitable. It is a manmade disaster and those who make war can choose peace. What is missing is political will, moral courage, and sustained goodwill.
As world leaders gather in New York for the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 78), AHRC calls upon them to rise to the moment. The world is watching. This is a time for leadership that chooses diplomacy over war, dialogue over division, and justice over oppression. Commitments made at the United Nations must be honored not in words alone, but in policy, action, and accountability. Peace requires more than statements — it requires resolve.
The same call applies here at home. The United States is experiencing deep polarization and social fragmentation. Peace is needed within nations as urgently as it is between them. A culture of peace begins with rejecting hate, extremism, and political rhetoric that fuels division.
AHRC urges all peace-loving people to help build a global culture that is human rights and peace. Civilians — especially women and children continue to bear the greatest burden of war. Generations live with the scars of violence. A peaceful world is possible if enough people demand it and if justice becomes the foundation upon which peace is built.
Together with partner organizations, supporters, and donors, AHRC remains committed to advancing human rights as the cornerstone of lasting and just peace. We envision a world free from hate, violence, extremism, torture, and injustice, a world that protects the dignity and rights of all, regardless of race, gender, faith, or national origin.
Peace is the foundation of all human rights. It is not possible to enjoy human rights in the midst of war. May this year’s International Day of Peace inspire renewed commitment to understanding, compassion, and unity across the globe.
