[Michigan, December 10, 2024]:
The American Human Rights Council (AHRC-USA) joins the global community in observing International Human Rights Day that falls annually on December 10.
On this day in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). In 1950, the General Assembly passed a resolution officially recognizing December 10 as Human Rights Day worldwide. this year’s theme is “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now”.
Human Rights Day honors and celebrates the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. However, this important day also serves as a strong reminder that we must continue to work together to ensure that every person can enjoy the human rights guaranteed in the Declaration.
This year, Human Rights Day falls amidst a world torn by wars and conflicts with human rights being violently violated. Human rights are human rights. This applies here at home as well as Ukraine, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Yemen and anywhere else in the world.
“The cause of human rights has suffered a major setback when human rights were used selectively,” said Imad Hamad, AHRC Executive Director. “Human rights should not be politicized and used as a weapon,” added Hamad. “Most of our world’s problems would be solved if we put human rights front and center,” concluded Hamad.
