The American Human Rights Council (AHRC-USA) joins Catholics across America and the globe, people of all faiths, and peace-loving individuals in mourning the passing of Pope Francis—the Pope of Peace—a beacon of hope and humanity.
On March 13, 2013, Jorge Mario Bergoglio was introduced to the world as the 266th Pope, taking the name Francis in honor of St. Francis of Assisi. As the first Jesuit Pope, he became the spiritual guide to nearly 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide, embodying humility, compassion, and unwavering dedication to justice.
Pope Francis was more than a spiritual leader; he was a humanitarian whose actions spoke louder than words. He championed social justice, migrants’ rights, and global peace, living a life of profound humility and solidarity with the poor and marginalized. His voice resonated in the face of crises, calling for an end to wars, conflicts, and human suffering. He never wavered in his mission for peace, using his influence to call for unity, justice, and dignity for all.
In his final Easter address, Pope Francis reaffirmed his call for peace, urging a ceasefire in Gaza and Ukraine. He condemned the violence in Gaza, describing it as “war” and “terrorism,” and appealed for an end to the cycle of suffering in the Holy Land. His words were a plea for humanity to rise above division and embrace compassion.
President Trump honored Pope Francis’s passing by directing U.S. flags and state flags to be lowered to half-staff, calling it “an honor.”
The world has lost an extraordinary spiritual leader and a tireless voice for peace. Pope Francis’s legacy will endure, inspiring generations to strive for a more just and compassionate world. He will forever be remembered as the Pope of Peace, a symbol of hope, humility, and unwavering faith.
