[Michigan, November 22, 2023]:

The American Human Rights Council (AHRC-USA) welcomes the announcement of the anticipated temporary truce halting all the military operations and combat in the occupied Gaza Strip. We hope this will lead to a full and lasting ceasefire and accelerating serious diplomacy efforts to resolve all the outstanding issues.

The anticipated four- day pause will help exchange of prisoners between Israel and Hamas and will allow passage of the dire humanitarian aid into Gaza. This limited pause of military actions came because of intense negotiations that were arranged by the efforts of Qatar, Egypt, and the Biden Administration. AHRC salutes all who contributed to this deal.

AHRC recognizes that this step will grant truly little relief to the civilians in Gaza who have suffered under Israeli denial of basic needs, assaults, massive destruction, and massive killings. However, one should not downplay the significance of this small step in a state of starvation and genocidal war. The extreme far right-wing Netanyahu government has all along refused even limited humanitarian pauses.

AHRC urges all parties to fully comply with the agreed terms of the truce for the sake of saving lives. AHRC hopes that this basic and limited ceasefire will lead to a complete ceasefire.

On a different note, AHRC salutes the city councils of Detroit, Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, and Hamtramck for their resolutions calling for a ceasefire.

AHRC calls upon the Biden Administration to seize the diplomatic momentum and push for a complete and full cycle ceasefire, let all needed aid enter Gaza unimpeded and start working on a real peaceful resolution of the conflict.

“This anticipated temporary ceasefire is evidence that diplomacy works, and that violence is not the answer,” said Imad Hamad, AHRC Executive Director. “We are confident that if Israel ends its genocidal attack on Gaza, continuing on the path of diplomacy will result in the release of all the prisoners,” concluded Hamad.
