Michigan, September 12, 2023]:

The American Human Rights Council (AHRC-USA) calls upon all people of goodwill and all countries to lend immediate humanitarian aid to the victims of the recent earthquake that hit Morocco. It has been reported that over 2500 have been killed and thousands more injured. The extent of the deaths is not yet known since many are feared to be still buried under the rubble.

Another disaster and human tragedy occurred in Libya claiming over two thousand dead. The numbers are expected to increase drastically. The Red Cross in Libya said that close to 10,000 people are missing and feared dead.

Morocco is a top tourist destination, and the earthquake has surprised many. Morocco is not known for earthquakes. Because it is an old country with old cities and old structures, the earthquake has caused devastating destruction and displaced thousands of others.

Libya is one country that has been torn by war, conflict, and political division for over 10 years since the overthrow of the Qaddafi regime.

Both disasters in Morocco and Libya are believed to be the result of climate change. The year 2023 has also seen unprecedented heat waves and fires.

AHRC salutes all countries as well as charity organizations that have rushed to help. AHRC urges all aid organizations to continue to offer help to the victims of the earthquake and the floods in Libya. This earthquake reminds us of the earthquakes that hit Syria and Turkey earlier this year impacting millions. The Libya floods remind us of floods we have seen in other parts of the world as well.

AHRC expresses its condolences to the people of Morocco and Libya for the dead and wishes all the injured a speedy recovery.

“Earthquakes and natural disasters remind us of the fragility of our existence,” said Imad Hamad, AHRC Executive Director. “And the human tragedy calls for our generosity and compassion,” added Hamad.
