[Michigan, May 1, 2025]

The American Human Rights Council (AHRC-USA) celebrates the recent decision of the South Carolina District Court in Florence to release Mr. A. Al Aqlan, a 20-year-old Yemeni national and Dearborn, Michigan resident, after three years of legal proceedings.

The case began in March 2022, when Mr. Al Aqlan faced allegations of attempting to climb over a wire fence at Myrtle Beach International Airport to access a secure area. The legal journey presented significant challenges, including the process of evaluating Mr. Al Aqlan’s competence to stand trial and fully participate in his defense. These evaluations were critical to ensuring a fair trial, emphasizing the indispensable role of due process in the justice system. Once competence was confirmed, the court acted decisively. Mr. Al Aqlan has since reunited with his family in Michigan.

AHRC commends the Federal Public Defender’s team for their unwavering commitment to upholding due process and the rule of law. Their dedication played a crucial role in securing just proceedings for Mr. Al Aqlan’s case.

AHRC also extends its heartfelt appreciation to the American Center for Justice (ACJ) in Dearborn for their principled and steadfast support. Their assistance, cooperation, and presence during the final court session in South Carolina were invaluable.

This case underscores the significance of maintaining faith in the legal system and its capacity to deliver justice through impartial procedures. It further highlights the fundamental importance of due process in safeguarding justice.

AHRC was involved with this case from the beginning. The case was an immense hardship not just on Abdulrahman but on the whole family as well. With Al Aqlan’s case, AHRC reaffirms its commitment to advocating for human rights and supporting individuals and families during challenging times. This case reinforces the value of due process as a cornerstone of justice and inspires continued dedication to protecting and promoting human rights.

“We have faith in the American justice system,” said Imad Hamad, AHRC Executive Director. “We encourage fighting injustice in the legal system,” added Hamad. “This case reaffirms the fact that America has some of the best judges and lawyers in the world,” concluded Hamad.
