[Michigan, March 30, 2026] — As Palestinians worldwide commemorate Land Day, the American Human Rights Council (AHRC USA) underscores the enduring significance of this historic day and its heightened relevance amid the ongoing war in Gaza and the escalating violence across the West Bank. This year’s Land Day also comes at a time of widening regional conflict involving Lebanon and Iran, further threatening the stability and safety of the Middle East.
Land Day marks the events of March 30, 1976, when the Israeli government announced plans to expropriate thousands of dunams of land for state use. In response, Palestinian citizens of Israel organized a general strike and mass demonstrations from the Galilee to the Negev. Israeli police and military forces opened fire on unarmed protesters, killing six, injuring around one hundred, and arresting hundreds more.
Scholars widely regard Land Day as a defining moment in the modern Palestinian national movement. It was the first time since 1948 that Palestinians inside Israel mobilized collectively as a national community. Since then, Land Day has become a central date in the Palestinian political calendar, observed annually by Palestinians in Israel, the occupied territories, and communities around the world.
This year’s commemoration unfolds under the shadow of an unprecedented humanitarian crisis across the region. The wars in Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran have resulted in extensive civilian casualties, widespread destruction, and the displacement of large segments of the population.
Conditions in the West Bank have also sharply deteriorated, with increased raids, arrests, settler violence, and severe restrictions on movement. International humanitarian agencies continue to warn of famine level food shortages, collapsing medical systems, and the urgent need for sustained global intervention.
AHRC reiterates its call for an end to what it describes as the illegal and immoral occupation, and for the release of all Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli prisons before their execution.
AHRC urges the international community to take meaningful and immediate action to halt Palestinian suffering, prevent further escalation, and work toward ending the conflicts in Lebanon and Iran. AHRC calls for renewed global commitment to a genuine peace process, beginning with United Nations intervention and a comprehensive ceasefire that can pave the way for a just and lasting peace.
“Human rights transcend politics,” said Imad Hamad, AHRC Executive Director. “Regardless of our political or ideological preferences, we should all be outraged when human rights are violated. The denial of Palestinians’ rights to freedom and dignity in their own homeland should shock the conscience of every person who believes in human rights and basic decency.”
