The American Human Rights Council (AHRC-USA) joins Ferndale officials, residents, and the broader community in welcoming the Ferndale City Council’s decision to recognize April as National Arab American Heritage Month.

AHRC salutes Mayor Pro Tem Laura Mikulski, the Ferndale City Council members, and all who worked diligently to pass this resolution during a highly sensitive political climate.

This recognition comes at a time of tremendous challenges facing our nation and the world. It reaffirms the shared values of diversity, inclusion, and our collective commitment to a shared humanity and shared future.

Adopted on March 23, 2026, the resolution celebrates the longstanding contributions of Arab Americans to the cultural, economic, and social fabric of the city, the state, and the nation.

“Arab Americans have contributed greatly to the cultural, economic, and social fabric of this city and this state. Taking the time to acknowledge that history and those contributions truly matter,” said Mr. Abdallah Sheikh, President of the Arab American and Muslim Political Action Committee (AMPAC), during his remarks to the council.

Dr. Ahmed “A.G.” Ghanim also addressed the council, emphasizing unity during challenging times. “In moments like these, when hate and polarization are dominant, resolutions like this remind us as a community that our strength comes from our diversity—not despite it,” he said, thanking the council for its recognition.

Mayor Pro Tem Laura Mikulski expressed appreciation to the community leaders involved, thanking Dr. Ghanim for his role in advancing the resolution and Mr. Abdullah Sheikh for attending on behalf of AMPAC. She also extended special thanks to Mr. Imad Hamad and the American Human Rights Council (AHRC) for their support in reviewing and contributing to the resolution.

“This recognition sends a clear message: every community matters, and every contribution counts.” Said Imad Hamad, AHRC Executive Director. “It is a reaffirmation of our shared values of dignity, inclusion, and respect for all.” concluded Hamad.

This resolution marks a key step in acknowledging and honoring the deep-rooted impact and contributions of Arab Americans within the Ferndale community.
