[Michigan May 15, 2025]
The American Human Rights Council (AHRC-USA) joins the international community and all peace-loving people across the globe in observing May 15 as Nakba Day. This date marks the Palestinian catastrophe—Al-Nakba—which began on May 15, 1948. The Nakba signifies the ongoing dispossession and suffering of the Palestinian people and affirms their historical and legal right to their homeland. Contrary to recent narratives, the roots of the conflict did not begin on October 7, 2024, as some continue to claim falsely.
For 77 years, the Palestinian people have endured displacement, occupation, and oppression. Hundreds of thousands have been killed, injured, imprisoned, or abused in one of the many ways that Israel invents to make Palestinian lives hard. Millions are forced to live in exile and have been turned into refugees in neighboring Arab countries.
The historical record is clear: the core of the conflict lies in the continued illegal and immoral occupation of Palestinian land. Ending this occupation is the only path to a just and lasting peace that all people, regardless of nationality, deserve.
The renewed and ongoing Israeli military campaign in Gaza and the West Bank represents a culmination of 77 years of injustice. This conflict has witnessed repeated cycles of violence, but the current crisis in Gaza has surpassed all boundaries. Starvation is being used as a weapon of war, and children are dying in real-time due to deliberate deprivation of food, water, and necessities.
This year’s Nakba commemoration comes amid escalating Israeli aggression in the region, carried out with near impunity and bolstered by unconditional support from the United States and a few other Western nations. History will record these events, and this continued injustice will leave an indelible stain on the world’s conscience.
AHRC calls for reflection, accountability, and action. We hope that on this Nakba Day—May 15—all leaders, including President Trump, realize that there will not be peace, Abrahamic or any other, without a fair and just resolution of the Palestinian question. Even the first Arab to sign a peace treaty with Israel, Anwar Sadat, said that there would not be real peace without a just resolution to the Palestinian question.
