[Michigan, March 13, 2026]
The American Human Rights Council (AHRC-USA) strongly condemns the March 12, 2026, shooting targeting Temple Israel, a synagogue and school in West Bloomfield, Michigan. We are grateful that this violent incident resulted in no casualties.
AHRC commends local, state, and federal law enforcement for their swift and coordinated response to protect the community. Police departments in Dearborn, Detroit, and neighboring cities promptly increased security around houses of worship. We urge the public to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious activity. Protecting lives is a shared responsibility.
Gun violence continues to pose a serious and persistent threat across the nation. Active shootings and acts of hate endanger worship spaces of all faiths and undermine the safety and peace of innocent people. An attack on one faith community is an attack on all, and a crime against our shared humanity.
No institution is immune from becoming a target in these challenging times. No one should ever experience fear or terror in a place meant for peace, reflection, and community. This attack is yet another painful reminder of the ongoing threat of gun violence in our society. Tragically, it is not the first such attack, and it may not be the last.
AHRC recognizes that the perpetrator was deeply affected by the traumatic loss of family members in Lebanon, which impacted his mental state. However, no motive or circumstance can justify violence against innocent people and houses of worship.
Such acts demand a unified response from all sectors of society—local, state, and federal governments, civil society, and everyday citizens. Collaboration and sustained engagement are essential to strengthening public safety.
AHRC calls on the media to be transparent, factual, and objective in its coverage. Words are important as we seek peace and security for all.
AHRC urges all houses of worship to take security seriously and enhance their safety measures. This is especially important for Muslim institutions as the final ten days of Ramadan draw larger crowds and extended hours of worship.
