[Michigan, November 5, 2025
The American Human Rights Council (AHRC-USA) extends its heartfelt congratulations to all the winners of this election. Key races in Michigan, New York, and New Jersey helped shape the national political landscape and set the tone for the pivotal 2026 midterm elections. The results reflect a clear desire for change, voiced by voters across the country during a time of heightened frustration caused by one of the longest government shutdowns in recent history—an event that deeply affected the social and economic wellbeing of countless Americans.
Voters have spoken. Their decisions must be respected. Now is the time to heal, reconcile, and unite around the shared goal of strengthening our cities, neighborhoods, and communities. The challenges ahead remain significant and demand collective action, cooperation, and civic engagement. With the debates behind us, AHRC encourages continued public involvement to advance our common interests and shape a better future.
AHRC salutes all candidates—those who won and those who did not—for their commitment to public service. Participating in civic life is never easy, and such engagement is essential to a thriving democracy. AHRC also commends the youth who contributed to campaign efforts and worked the polls. Their dedication exemplifies democracy in action.
This year’s elections featured hotly contested and high-stakes races. Among them, the victory of Zohran Mamdani as Mayor of New York City stands out as historic and inspiring. His win underscores the power of principled leadership and the resilience of truth in the face of political pressure and intimidation. Mamdani’s success is a beacon for future leaders and a catalyst for continued change.
Equally significant was the re-election of Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud, who triumphed despite facing heated negative campaigning. Dearborn residents, like those in New York, made their voices heard and reaffirmed their commitment to democratic values. Their vote of confidence is a powerful testament to the enduring strength of democracy.
AHRC warmly congratulates Mayor-Elect Mary Sheffield, the first African American woman elected Mayor of Detroit; Mayor-Elect Moe Baydoun of Dearborn Heights; Mayor-Elect Adam Al Harbi of Hamtramck; and all newly elected city council members across the region.
As Michigan and the nation look ahead to the 2026 midterm elections, AHRC urges voters to reflect on the lessons of this year’s contests. The upcoming elections offer a vital opportunity to continue the momentum for meaningful change and to uphold the values that make America strong.
“Voting is only one form of political participation,” said Imad Hamad, AHRC Executive Director. “We urge the citizens to remain involved in the politics of the city, the state and the country,” added Hamad.
